Why I chose Creative Arts?

Siva Kumar followed his heart and chose to build a career in the creative arts industry

After completion of my intermediate, I was confused about which field of study to choose as I was not keen on pursuing engineering like many of my friends. I approached a career counsellor for assistance. I have always been good at art and using my imagination. The counselling results confirmed that my interest and talents lie in subjects related to creative arts. After a review of my career options, I decided to join a Bachelor’s program in animation.

My next challenge was to choose the right college for my Bachelors program. During my search my father met Mahender Sir who is an industry and educational expert in animation.  He recommended the BFA at Annapurna College of Film + Media. I presented my case of studying animation to my father outlining how much the field has grown and how one can build a successful career. My father was convinced and he admitted me.  Annapurna I provided me with a strong foundation in animation and I developed a full range of skills needed for the industry.

By the time I completed my Bachelor’s, I decided that I wanted to specialize in 3D animation and compositing. I was not confident enough to start applying for jobs as I knew I needed to enhance my skills further to get a good placement. It was then that I approached Mahender Sir again. After looking at my portfolio, he suggested the areas in which I needed to improve. He also introduced me to an industry expert in 3D animation who gave me pointers on what the industry was looking for in their new recruits. Mahender Sir also helped me with an internship where I could work and learn how to collaborate in a creative organization.

As I learned more and more about 3D animation and compositing, the more I wanted to learn.  When I expressed my interest in pursuing my education further, Sir explained the advantages of an overseas education. It was a big investment so again I started to do my research to make sure studying abroad had a good return on investment (ROI).  When I discovered that the average salary of graduates from top programs was close to USD 100,000 once established in the industry, it became clear that it was worth it.  I officially signed up for a program with Creative Aspiration to help me hone the skills needed for my portfolio and help find the right Master’s programs abroad.  Vivek Sir was assigned to me by Creative Aspirations as my Creative Mentor.  His passion and skills as a teacher were inspiring. He not only taught me new techniques and skills, he was instrumental in instilling confidence in my abilities. Head of Admissions, Sheldon, also guided me through the admissions process and helped me identify the right programs that focused on my specialization.  He helped me put my story into a statement of purpose that really highlighted my journey and who I am.  He also assisted my recommenders in building the best possible letters of recommendation.

Then it all came together.  I submitted, my applications to the programs I really wanted including a portfolio I was very proud of along with few supporting documents that really felt like me.  The process took about six months, but the result was worth it.  I got into my dream program, SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design).  I am thrilled and so is my family.  While a lot of people have supported me in finding the right career and teaching me the skills, I have to give a special thanks to Mahender Sir.  His support in helping me find the right Bachelor’s degree and then the support in finding the right mentors and understanding the industry has been amazing.  He is always there to provide me advice.  In fact, he always has the time to talk to students who are sincere in mastering their skills and want to work hard. The whole team at Creative Aspirations has truly prepared me for the next big step in my education on the path to a bright career.
